ABOUT US
Creating an Earthtree through Sustainability Action. A tree of Green people working in harmony with nature.
We are a registered environmental sustainability organisation (established as a Trust under the Indian Trusts Act) dedicated to enabling rural and urban communities, educational institutions, and businesses to transition towards sustainable practices and adopt zero waste solutions.
At the heart of our work lies a fundamental belief: that every individual and organisation desires to contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet. However, meaningful sustainability action begins with awareness—supported by an enabling environment and access to practical, scalable solutions. Our goal is to create ecosystems where sustainable living becomes not just a choice, but the default way of life.
Our mission is to demystify ‘waste’ and promote circularity—an approach where resources are reused, repurposed, and reintegrated, instead of discarded. We believe that embracing circular economy principles is crucial for reducing the burden on our planet’s finite resources and achieving long-term climate resilience.
Through customised and impact-driven programs, we empower individuals and organisations to adopt zero waste lifestyles and take SMART steps—Small, Measurable, Actionable, Reachable Targets—that lead to tangible environmental outcomes. Our initiatives are rooted in behaviour change and implemented through deep collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including community groups, educational institutions, businesses, and local governments.
We invite individuals, communities, educational institutes, corporations, CSR partners, and philanthropic foundations to join us in scaling these efforts. With your support, we can amplify our collective impact—transforming mindsets, influencing systems, and driving measurable change towards a more sustainable, inclusive, and circular future.

Waste Tsunami- A crisis needing urgent action
Our lifestyles today are centred around consumption—what we buy, how much we own, and how quickly we upgrade have become markers of success and aspiration. This trend of over-consumption is leading to rapid depletion of natural resources.
We are consuming almost twice as much as nature can replenish, and our everyday choices—what we consume and how we discard—are polluting the environment, destroying biodiversity, and disturbing our harmony with nature. Waste has become one of the biggest environmental crises of our time.
Every single day, the waste we generate—individually and collectively—contributes to what can only be called a Waste Tsunami. Globally, we generate enough waste each year to match the height and mass of Mount Everest. In India alone, each person produces around 0.50 kg of waste per day, contributing to a national crisis.

The consequences are devastating—waste contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, and when we discard resources thoughtlessly, we lose the energy and effort that went into making them. This is not just an environmental issue—it’s a health crisis, both for people and the planet.
If we don’t act now, this Waste Tsunami will overwhelm our ecosystems, disrupt lives and livelihoods, and leave us all to pay a steep environmental and social cost.
It’s time for eco-restoration and for reconnecting with nature as a matter of survival, not choice.
The cost of inaction is too high. Let’s not let waste define our future.
Guiding Force
Smita
Managing Trustee
Smita Ahuja has been a resident of Gurugram for over two decades and has witnessed first-hand the city’s rapid transformation from a quiet township to a dense urban landscape. Concerned by the declining environmental quality, she committed herself to working in the field of sustainability and circularity more than 12 years ago.
Her work spans across community, institutional, and government levels, where she has engaged with local administrations, schools, self-help groups, medical professionals, civil society organisations, and citizens to drive awareness and action. She was instrumental in establishing Samadhaan Hub in Gurugram—an innovative waste solutions centre created by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) in partnership with iamgurgaon. The hub provides residents with practical tools for managing diverse categories of waste and has gained significant recognition, including being featured in NDTV’s Swasth Banega India campaign in October 2020.
In 2022, she supported the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India, as an expert reviewer for the Swachhta Saarthi Fellowship Program. This national initiative encourages young innovators and community leaders to create value from waste and build a strong network of “Swachhta Saarthis” across India. Since 2018, she has also served as a member of the Citizens Supervisory Committee (CSC) of MCG for Solid Waste Management, contributing to frameworks and processes for city-wide waste management systems.
With a strong belief in both individual and collective social responsibility, Smita advocates for sustainable living as a shared duty to current and future generations. She received Green Impact Award for Gurugram from MCG, Kalagram and Govt of Haryana in 2024. Alongside her work in the environmental sector, she brings over 25 years of professional experience with leading corporates, including Hindustan Unilever, Reebok, and the Sterling Group, as well as consulting and postgraduate teaching. She continues to work as an independent consultant while leading Earthtree as its Managing Trustee.
